Polycon Radio System

Headset Services Limited is the UK and Europe distributor for the Polycon waterproof radio intercom system from Aksnes in Norway. The Polycon Radio system in the aircraft interfaces straight into the aircraft's intercom. The winchman can talk on the intercom via his Polycon radio as if he is in the aircraft, completely hands free giving him more mobility and improving safety. Headset Services Limited also provide a range of headsets and helmet upgrades to interface with the Polycon system. We make a waterproof helmet loom upgrade for most helmets that provides a complete and reliable communication system.

Radio Transceiver

The Polycon Transceiver is constructed to meet the stringent quality requirements for equipment used under demanding conditions typically for helicopter search and rescue operations, and other outdoor activities which often take place under extreme operational and environmental conditions.

The Transceiver is designed for ease of operation without compromising the integrity of the unit and safeguarding against interruptions caused by unintentional operation. The whole unit is constructed as a multifunction ‘ PTT’ key, with additional standard radio functions.

The unit can be used as a dedicated waterproof intercom for SAR (Search And Rescue) operations as well as a standard ‘walkietalkie’ radio. The radio incorporates the PTT switch/security.

Features

Standard frequency UHF 409 - 419 (custom frequencies in the range 409 - 470 on request)
Dual band UHF/VHF option
Channal spacing 25 KHz
16 channels
Environmental IP67 Waterproof
VOX/PTT operation - handsfree PTT
Operating temperature - 25ºC to 55ºC
Channel scanning
Can be operated as hand held radio
Low profile “dual band” antenna

Processing Unit

The Polycon Base Station 004RLI together with one or more crewmember’s transceivers form a wireless extension of the aircraft’s ICS. The unit operates as a base station with interface to the ICS, and as a repeater station for communication between ground crew.

The Base Station contains an advanced internal radio and processing package, which in addition to high system integration tolerance offers duplex communication facilities. Normally the Base Station will be permanently installed in the aircraft, and connected to dedicated intercom and DC power outlets.

The communication range of the radio system is dependent of output power, antenna location, antenna gain and altitude. The 50O BNC antenna socket can either be connected to a ‘unit mounted’ antenna, or to an external mounted antenna via coaxial cable.

Waterproof Adaptors

Headset Services Limited is able to supply waterproof adaptors for the Polycon Radio System.

HSMP3440
Adaptor Lead - Lemo plug to NEXUS U93/U plug - converts a helmet fitted with the waterproof Polycon loom assy back to NEXUS U93/U plug for use in aircraft intercom.

HSMP3441
Main Adaptor Lead Coiled - Interfaces the Polycon Radio Fischer socket to a Lemo waterproof plug. This reduces wear and tear on the radio socket thus reducing downtime of the radio. The cable then accepts the Headset Services Ltd waterproof helmet upgrade loom assy socket or any of the Headset Services Ltd headsets or waterproof accessories to provide a complete waterproof system.

HSMP3442
Adaptor Lead - Lemo plug to NATO plug - converts a helmet fitted with the waterproof Polycon loom assy back to NATO plug for use in aircraft intercom.

HSMP3444
Adaptor large Fischer plug to NATO socket to enable standard NATO headset to interface with Polycon radio.

Repair Services

Due to the harsh and extreme environment that this equipment is designed to be used in, the manufacturer (Axnes Aviation AS Norway) recommend that the Polycon system is periodically inspected and overhauled to ensure continued serviceability and to prevent expensive failures due to salt corrosion, seal degradation and water ingress.

Polycon System overhaul every 2 years from date of purchase. Polycon System mandatory Battery replacement every 4 years from date of purchase * this may be revised as more failure rate data is collected.

HSL offers a fixed labour price (+ Parts required) repair scheme which covers periodic maintenance and any incidental failure in use. Call HSL for more information.
